Mindfulness Enhances Travel Benefits

Does Mindfulness enhance the inherent benefits of travel?
Short answer: Yes!  II have meditated during nearly all of my travels around the U.S.A. and the world.  I have enjoyed many peak experiences.  But I've also encountered and transcended many travel glitches that would have spoiled the trip for many.

Enjoy the Richness of Travel with Mindfulness

Mindfulness allows you to tune in and fully appreciate all your experiences. Travel lets you enjoy and appreciate new things, such as:
  • The joy and delight of surprises
  • Being open to the unexpected
  • Letting go of your preconceived notions and your biases
  • Tuning in with different senses, and appreciating things differently
  • Exposing you to new ideas that enhance your creativity.

The Miracle of This Moment

In mindfulness training, I like to emphasize fully experiencing your life in the present moment. Why is that important?  Well, I'll answer it this way.  If you are doing mindfulness correctly, at some point you will realize and appreciate the miracle of all life.

Your life is also a miracle, as your body automatically breathes and circulates blood and maintained your digestion and your basal temperature.  Throughout your day, do you see the miracle everywhere?  As you travel, are you aware of it?

Your life is rich, whether you are normally aware of it or not. Your senses are a rich, miraculous pageant passing through your conscious awareness.  Just appreciate the subtle fragrance around you ....

Reduce Negatives = Enhance Positives
Travel does have its challenges. When things don't go quite to your expectations, how do you handle it without spoiling the trip (or getting arrested)?

What is the best state of mind to enjoy travel?  Are you in your best state of mind?  If your mind is busy and full of preconceived ideas, you will miss or ignore what is different.  Mental distractions dilute any experience.

It's normal to experience frustration with travel problems. How quickly do you recover your best state of mind so you can problem-solve and continue with the trip?

Let's say that the Museum you wanted to see is unexpectedly closed. (Worse yet, it's always closed then, but you were mixed up on the dates or the days of the week.) Disappointment is normal, but how long do you ruin the trip by stewing about it? How quickly can you come to your senses and revise your plans to see other priorities?

Not Just Travel
Why wait for travel to be Mindful? The same benefits accrue to you, even embroiled in your work and daily life. Find a practice to help deal w/ your daily drama.

Coronavirus Disclaimer
Of course, in these days of Wuhan Covid-19, I don't suggest booking travel immediately (State Department Advisory). One must be "mindful" of risk factors. Once the Coronavirus caution has passed, you will again remember your bucket list of lifetime goals and want to travel again.

(If you haven't see my previous post on Covid-19, take a look. I continue to monitor multiple sources: State Department, CDC, and many Travel Industry sites.)

Eventually ... you will again think about travel. Please visit my website: https://sites.google.com/view/mindfultraveler/
